Most people searching for herbal tea near FIU are somewhere between classes with a short window, and they want something warm or cold that won't leave them wired all afternoon. specialTEA Lounge is about two minutes from campus on Coral Way, and the herbal side of our loose leaf list is built for exactly that kind of stop. This guide is about the daytime version: what counts as herbal, what to drink it with at lunch, and how to grab it fast when you're running between buildings.
Where to find herbal tea near FIU
We've been Miami's Original Tea Lounge since June 2009, in the Columbia Shopping Plaza at 10766 SW 24th St (Coral Way). Our list runs past 60 varieties of premium loose leaf, and on the visit page you'll see we pour black, green, white, oolong, herbal and rooibos teas. Every cup is brewed from whole leaf, never bags.
That makes us more of a tea house near FIU than a coffee stop, though we do serve USDA organic, fair trade coffee too. If you're used to grabbing whatever's closest at a coffee shop near FIU, the difference here is that the tea is the main event, and the team is trained to walk you through the menu instead of pointing at a shelf of boxes.
Herbal vs. true tea, in plain English
This is the part that trips people up. True tea all comes from the same plant, and black, green, white and oolong are just different ways of processing it. All of those carry caffeine. Herbal tea isn't from that plant at all. It's an infusion of other flowers, leaves or roots, and that's why it's usually caffeine free.
Two herbals on our list are easy places to start:
- South African rooibos. Reddish, naturally sweet and smooth, and it holds up well with milk. If you normally like a creamy latte, this is probably your herbal.
- Egyptian chamomile. Light and floral. It's the gentle one, good when you want something that tastes like a cup of tea without the jolt.
The rest of the herbal selection moves around, so the simplest thing is to ask at the counter what's on today. You can also check the live tea list on our menu page before you leave campus, so you're not deciding while a line forms behind you.
Why does any of this matter at midday? Because a lot of FIU days stack an early coffee, an afternoon energy drink and a late study session on top of each other. Swapping the afternoon one for an herbal is an easy way to keep drinking something you like without piling on more caffeine before an evening class.
Iced, creamy or with lunch
Miami heat doesn't really let up in October, so hot pots aren't the only option. Our loose leaf teas come as hot pots and as iced teas, and an iced rooibos is one of the more refreshing things you can carry back to class. Want it creamy? Every drink can be made with organic soy, almond or oat milk, which is why plenty of people treat us as a vegan cafe near FIU even though we're a tea lounge first.
Herbal tea is also a good lunch drink, because it doesn't fight with food the way a strong black tea or espresso can. A few pairings that work:
- Iced rooibos with one of our signature chicken or brisket sandwiches, made fresh daily.
- A pot of chamomile with a salad or a wrap when you want something lighter.
- Any herbal with a vegan cookie, baked fresh daily in six flavors including matcha chocolate chip and double chocolate.
Early class? Our signature breakfast sandwiches come on butter croissants with organic eggs, and an herbal next to one is a softer start than a double shot. If you need plant-based protein, we have TVP and beefless strips for sandwiches and wraps.
And if you'd rather have it cold and thick, the frozen side of the menu has coffee-free frozen cremes, and the frozen drinks and smoothies are vegan-friendly with no added sugar and non-GMO ingredients.
A specialty tea bar near FIU that fits a class schedule
We open at 8:00 AM Monday through Friday, so you can come in before a morning lecture. Weekday hours are 8:00 AM to 11:00 PM, Saturday is 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM, and Sunday is 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Parking is free in the Columbia Shopping Plaza lot right in front of the door, which is a real perk when you're used to circling a campus garage.
Short on time? Order ahead for pickup on Toast and your tea is waiting when you pull in. If you can't make it over at all, we deliver through Uber Eats and DoorDash. Joining the Tea Circle gets you exclusive deals, new menu drops and birthday treats, which adds up if you're stopping by a few times a week.
Got a gap longer than twenty minutes? Stay. The WiFi is free and high-speed, with no password and no time limit, and our WiFi and study guide covers the best seats for getting work done. There's a colorful outdoor patio with fresh air and natural light, and a full board game library if your study group needs a break. For directions from FIU, Coral Gables, Kendall and the rest of the area, check our visit page.
Next time you're between classes and want something better than a vending machine drink, swing by specialTEA for an iced rooibos or a pot of chamomile. Come for the tea, stay for the vibes.
