Tea Shop Miami: Board Games, Boba, and Late Nights

If you have been looking for a tea shop in Miami where you can actually stay a while, the board game shelf is the detail worth knowing about. specialTEA Lounge sits in the Columbia Shopping Plaza at 10766 SW 24th St on Coral Way, about two minutes from FIU, and the full library of board games and card games is free to every guest. You order a pot of tea, pull a game off the shelf, and the afternoon mostly takes care of itself.

We have been Miami-Dade's original tea lounge since June 2009, and a lot of the room was built around people staying: comfortable seating, free high-speed WiFi with no password and no time limits, and a kitchen that keeps going late. Game night here is not an event with a sign-up sheet. It is a shelf, a table, and whatever your group feels like playing.

How game night works at a tea shop in Miami

There is nothing to reserve and no list to get on. Come in, order at the counter, then pick something from the library. Board games and card games are both there, free for all guests, so a group of four can settle into a long strategy game while a pair on a first date gets through something short before their drinks go cold.

A few things people figure out on their second visit. Order food before you deal the first hand, because the sandwiches, wraps, and salads are made fresh daily and you will not want to pause mid-round for them. Tables fill up as the evening goes on, so starting earlier on a weekend gives you your pick of seats. And if your group is still going strong, restocking drinks is easy, since we are open until 11 PM six days a week.

What to drink while you play

The tea list runs past 60 varieties of loose leaf sourced from gardens around the world, brewed from whole leaf rather than bags, so you can pick by mood instead of by habit. A hot pot of Indian spiced chai or Taiwanese oolong will stretch across a couple of rounds happily. If you are the person at the table who wants something to chew on, the boba menu covers more than 10 flavors with classic tapioca pearls, popping pearls, and fruit jellies, and taro, thai tea, matcha, and honeydew are the ones regulars keep coming back to.

Later in the night, caffeine turns into a real decision. South African rooibos is naturally caffeine free and takes milk well, which makes it a comfortable pick when you still want something warm but the game is winding down. If the opposite is true and things are going into overtime, our coffee is USDA organic, fair trade certified, and locally roasted in Florida, and the cold brew steeps for 16 or more hours. The frozen side of the menu is worth a look too, particularly the matcha freeze and the chilly vanilla chai.

Snacks matter more than people expect at a table full of cards. Vegan cookies come out fresh daily in six flavors, and the Dubai smash croissant with pistachio kataifi tends to get photographed before anyone rolls a die. The full lineup lives on our menu, along with the breakfast sandwiches on butter croissants if your game night happens to be a morning one.

The patio, the WiFi, and why people stay

Our patio is colorful and open to the air, and it is the best seat in the house whenever Miami hands us a decent evening. Inside, the chalkboard walls and warm lighting make a table feel like somewhere you can settle without anyone hovering. Free parking sits right in front of the door in the Columbia Shopping Plaza lot, which is not a small detail when four friends are all arriving separately.

Plenty of guests come in for a game and end up staying to work instead, which we take as a compliment. The WiFi is free and high speed with no password and no time limits, and that is why FIU students and remote workers treat the lounge as a second office. If that is more your speed, we put together a full guide to studying and working here, and the visit page has directions plus drive times from Kendall, Doral, Coral Gables, and Downtown.

Come for the tea, stay for the vibes, and bring the friends who argue about the rules. We are on Coral Way near FIU, open until 11 PM six days a week, and the game shelf is never locked. If you would rather start from home, order ahead for pickup on Toast or get delivery through Uber Eats and DoorDash, and save the board games for the next visit.
