What a Specialty Tea Bar Really Means in Miami

The phrase specialty tea bar gets thrown around a lot these days, and it can mean just about anything. Sometimes it is a cafe with a couple of tea bags stashed behind the espresso machine. Sometimes it is a boba counter with syrups and not much else. So what should a real specialty tea bar actually offer? At specialTEA in Miami, we have been answering that question since 2009, when we opened as Miami-Dade's very first tea lounge. Here is how we think about it.

What actually makes a tea bar "specialty"

A specialty tea bar starts with the leaf. That sounds obvious, but it is the line that separates a genuine tea program from a menu that treats tea as an afterthought. When we opened, tea in most Miami spots meant a dusty box of bags at the back of a coffee menu. We set out to change that conversation entirely, and the standard we set was simple: every cup comes from premium loose leaf tea, never the dust and fannings you find inside conventional tea bags.

The second piece is knowing what to do with that leaf. Great tea deserves great preparation, which means proper water temperatures, precise steeping times, and presentation that treats the cup like it matters. A specialty tea bar should also have people behind the counter who can walk you through the menu, point you toward something new, and explain why a smoky Lapsang Souchong tastes nothing like a malty second-flush Darjeeling. That guidance is half the fun.

Over 60 loose leaf teas, brewed the right way

We source more than 60 varieties of loose leaf tea from tea gardens across the globe. Chinese green tea and Taiwanese oolong, South African rooibos, Indian spiced chai, Egyptian chamomile, and plenty in between. It is a lineup deep enough that regulars are still finding new favorites years in. You can order it however you like it, too: a hot pot of Earl Grey, an iced boba milk tea with tapioca pearls, a creamy London fog, or a matcha latte made the way it should be.

That range is really the heart of what specialty tea in Miami should look like. Not one house blend on repeat, but a wall of options with real character behind each one. If you want to see the full spread before you visit, our menu lays out the teas, the boba, the coffee, and the food all in one place.

More than tea: boba, organic coffee, and food

A specialty tea bar does not have to be tea and nothing else, and ours never was. Over the years we have grown the menu to match how people actually spend an afternoon here. There is classic tapioca boba plus popping pearls and fruit jellies across more than ten flavors, so you can build a bubble tea around almost any tea on the menu. Taro boba cremes, thai tea lattes, and matcha boba are the crowd favorites.

On the coffee side, everything is USDA organic, fair trade certified, and locally roasted, whether it is French pressed fresh or cold brewed for 16 hours or more. And because nobody wants to sip on an empty stomach, we make breakfast sandwiches on butter croissants, fresh salads and wraps, and vegan cookies baked in house. It all comes out of the same kitchen that takes the tea seriously, which is the whole point.

A specialty tea bar in Miami you can actually settle into

The last thing that separates a specialty tea bar from a grab-and-go counter is the room itself. Tea is slow by nature, and the space should let you match that pace. Ours has free high-speed WiFi with no passwords or time limits, a full shelf of board games, a colorful outdoor patio, and comfortable seating under warm lighting. We are open until 11 PM six days a week, so a late study session or an unhurried pot of tea with a friend both fit right in.

You will find us at 10766 SW 24th St on Coral Way, inside the Columbia Shopping Plaza and about two minutes from FIU in the Westchester neighborhood. Parking out front is free.
